UGC NET - 2026

UGC NET (University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test) is a national-level exam conducted by NTA to determine eligibility for two outcomes: Assistant Professor positions in Indian universities and colleges, and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for research funding. Any candidate with a Master's degree (55% marks for General; 50% for SC/ST/OBC/PwD) from a UGC-recognised university is eligible. If you want to teach at the university level or pursue funded research, UGC NET is your gateway exam.

UGC NET 2026 consists of two compulsory papers held in a single Computer-Based Test (CBT) of 3 hours. Paper 1 has 50 questions worth 100 marks on Teaching and Research Aptitude. Paper 2 has 100 questions worth 200 marks from your chosen subject. Total marks are 300. There is no negative marking.

Both UGC NET JRF and Assistant Professor eligibility are determined through the same exam and the same question paper. JRF is the higher tier, awarded only to candidates in the top-scoring band, and comes with a monthly research fellowship. Assistant Professor eligibility is awarded to a wider band of qualifiers. Qualifying UGC NET does not automatically mean you have qualified for JRF — the JRF cut-off is set separately and is higher.

Candidates must not be more than 30 years of age as of June 1, 2026, to be eligible for UGC NET JRF. A relaxation of five years is given to reserved category candidates (SC/ST/OBC/PwD). There is no age limit for the Assistant Professor category — candidates of any age can appear for that outcome.
